TRAVEL IN WORDS: A Four-Day Literary Celebration
Paris, 15-18 June 2006
There’s a scene in the life of Shakespeare & Company that has been played out well over a thousand times: young traveller arrives, guitar on shoulder or backpack in hand and asks timorously, “I was wondering, Mr. Whitman, if I could stay for a while?”
For nearly 55 years, George Whitman has provided shelter to countless young writers as they pass through Paris. Though the stewardship of the bookshop is now with the next generation, this year’s Shakespeare and Company Festival pays tribute to that tradition, bringing together some 27 of the best international travel writers.
We are truly delighted to welcome them and invite you to sojourn a while with us to celebrate their work and the intoxicating joy of travel.
